SNACK Swim at St Bartholomew’s Church

COVID-19 Safety Protocol

SNACK aims to follow the CDC’s Guidance for Public Pools, Hot Tubs, and Water Playgrounds During COVID-19

SNACK is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization providing year-round weekday, after-school and weekend recreational programs designed and staffed to address the needs of children, teens, and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other similar developmental and behavioral disabilities. This SNACK Swim at St Bartholomew’s Church COVID-19 Safety Protocol (“Protocol”) has been prepared based on the CDC and NYC DOHMH COVID-19 guidelines and the requirements of the St Bartholomew’s Church pool facility (the “Pool Facility”).

As specifically outlined in this Protocol, SNACK plans to:

  • Reopen the SNACK Swim at St Bartholomew’s Church program (the “Swim Program”) for in-person instruction and post this Protocol on our website,, updating it as needed ensuring our staff, members, families, community, and all necessary agencies can see what is happening in real time,

  • Monitor health and safety conditions for containment of potential transmission of COVID-19 in accordance with CDC and NYC DOHMH COVID-19 guidelines.

  • Address closure of the Swim Program if necessary by widespread virus transmission.

This Protocol is being posted on our website and shared with families and staff as well as via administrators in individual meetings and phone calls/zoom discussions as needed to answer specific questions and personal matters/concerns that may be unique to each families/individuals needs or confidential circumstances.

Please note that SNACK rents space at the Pool Facility in order to offer the Swim Program to the SNACK community. SNACK does not operate, manage or oversee the Pool Facility and therefore SNACK cannot and does not make any commitments regarding the cleaning and safety protocols taken by St Bartholomew’s Church or any members of the public who also use the Pool Facility.

All members, community habilitation workers, parents, and guardians (“visitors”) who attend and/or participate in the Swim Program do so at their own risk.

Entering and Exiting the Pool Facility

  • SNACK staff and all visitors who wish to enter the Pool Facility must submit our Covid Screening Questionnaire before entering the Pool Facility. Members may be accompanied by only one companion, who may be either a parent, guardian or community habilitation worker.

  • All visitors will enter through the locker room and shower before entering the pool area, where they will have their temperatures checked by staff and fill out the St Bartholomew’s Church contact tracing form.

  • If any individual answers positively to any question in the questionnaire (indicating potential exposure to or symptoms of COVID-19) or presents a temperature of greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, the individual will be denied entry into the Pool Facility.

  • All SNACK staff and visitors will be required to wear a face mask at all times while in the Pool Facility. While we understand that this may be a challenge to some of our members, they are encouraged to wear a mask.

  • Please arrive no more than five minutes prior to the member’s lesson, with the member already dressed in a bathing suit.

  • Staggered arrival and departure times will help limit interaction time. We ask that all visitors also exit the Pool Facility within five minutes of the member’s lesson ending.

  • All visitors will be directed to benches distanced 6 feet apart where the members will change out of their clothes, put on their wetsuits, keep personal belongings, and remain until lessons begin. The member’s companion is also encouraged to remain in the designated area to assist with emergencies, bathroom breaks, etc.

  • After the member’s lesson, the member’s companion will escort the member out of the pool to the designated changing area. The member’s companion must take all masks and personal belongings with them at this time.

  • Locker rooms will be limited to one member and companion at a time. Pop up tents will be made available on the pool deck for additional space to change. At this time, showers are not permitted after swimming.

  • Exits are located through the locker rooms.

COVID-19 Safe Lessons

  • We ask that all members wear a one piece wetsuit for the duration of their swim lesson. If a member is known to have a history of urination or defecation while swimming, the member must also wear a swim diaper under the wetsuit. Members are responsible for providing their own wetsuits and swim diapers.

  • We will have one designated staff member ensuring all visitors are maintaining social distancing, wearing appropriate PPE, disinfecting equipment, and answering any COVID-19-related concerns, so that lifeguards can focus on actively lifeguarding.

  • CDC guidelines state that cloth masks are ineffective in the water, and so members will not be required to wear masks in the pool.

  • Staff that enter the water will wear face shields. At this time, portions of the swim lessons and instructions may take place from the pool deck to minimize contact.

  • Lessons will be limited to forty minutes intervals, with all lessons starting and ending at their scheduled times. Late arrivals will not receive any additional time past the scheduled end-time of the lesson.

  • Shared teaching tools, goggles, caps, and other equipment will not be available.

Monitoring Health and Safety Conditions

In order to limit exposure and mitigate risk factors, where permitted by the Pool Facility:

  • Wherever possible and safe, doors will be propped open to limit touching handles so long as access control can be achieved.

  • Hand sanitizer dispensers will be available and accessible in the Pool Facility.

  • Signs will be posted reminding staff and visitors to use sanitizer, PPE, and maintain social distancing.

COVID-19 Testing

  • All staff will be required to be tested every two weeks for COVID-19. Test results will be submitted to Directors on predetermined days.

  • SNACK aims to follow the NYC DOHMH guidance for determining when individuals who test positive for COVID-19 symptoms can return to the in person work/programming environment. Individuals will be able to return to SNACK after a required 10 day quarantine/isolation period and once there is no fever without the use of fever-reducing medicine for 24 hours.

Positive COVID-19 Cases at Pool Facility

  • If SNACK learns of a positive COVID-19 case at the Pool Facility, then SNACK may temporarily close the Swim Program. SNACK will reopen the Swim Program when SNACK is satisfied that appropriate cleaning/disinfecting has been completed, or that sufficient time has passed since the positive case was discovered.

Handwashing and Hygiene Protocols

  • SNACK will require all staff and companions to wear masks while at the Pool Facility. We encourage members who are able to also do so. We understand that this may be difficult for some members due to sensory issues, health, and anxiety issues relating to their disabilities.

  • SNACK aims to follow all hygiene requirements as advised by the CDC and NYC DOHMH, including:

    • Training all staff and members on safety and hygiene. This includes adapting information/practices in meaningful ways for members that may include but aren’t limited to social stories, curriculum adaptations, and/or picture signs.

    • Creating extra time in the schedule for hand washing, especially after restroom breaks or other higher risk activities.

    • Providing easily accessible hand sanitizer dispensers filled with at least 60% alcohol-based sanitizer where hand washing is impractical.

Food Management

  • SNACK does not provide meal service.

  • Eating and drinking is not permitted in the Pool Facility (including the locker rooms).
